The Room Gets Brighter When You Do

September 25, 2026•4 min read

Here's what nobody puts on the birthday card....as the years add up, don't dim yourself or choose to shrink a little more each year. That choice is available for you to change, any day, starting today.

Success was never meant to be a tick the list exercise. Build the career, hit the numbers, the titles, finances, family and then in your later years, quietly step back and let the room forget your presence.

My "Human Side of Success" says something different. Success isn't just the career achievements and résumé, it's how fully you show up while you're living your personal and professional life and feel good about it. Newsflash - that gets richer with age, not smaller and every year adds more of you to bring into the room, not less.

This isn't a niche conversation, it's a demographic one. In New Zealand, well over a third of the population is now 50 and older, which puts close to a million women in that bracket alone. Across the Tasman, Australia's story is the same shape, just bigger, with millions of women moving through this exact stage of life right now. This is not a shrinking group. It's one of the fastest growing, most capable, most experienced slices of both countries.

When women at 50 plus choose to go quiet, entire industries lose access to the sharpest judgment and good wisdom they will ever have in the room. That is exactly why this message has to be loud.

What getting older actually hands you

It hands you more clarity about what matters and what doesn't. Less energy wasted performing for people who were never going to get you anyway. A voice that's earned its opinions instead of borrowing them or being another copycat.

Shrinking doesn't always look the same for us all. For a lot of women, it's going quiet in the room, speaking up less often, softening the opinion, taking up less space than they've earned. For a lot of men, it's going quiet on the ambition instead. Settling for coasting, letting the title speak instead of the fire that used to sit behind it. Different disguise but the same shrinking.

I see it play out in the opposite way in my own life. My business has grown stronger every year for the last five, and the last three have been phenomenal and I love my life so much. Not despite the years behind me but because of them. I'm leaning harder than ever into the wisdom, the business experience, the years of building a personal brand that only time could hand me.

Don't let your next birthday decide how you're going to show up. Let it remind you how much you've actually got to bring and share!

The women who prove it

I see this frequently on my show, The Essence Within You. This past year I've interviewed many women in their 50s, still running full speed at her work and life but with a different attitude and focus. Not slowing down, because the ambition is still there, the drive is still there and the why, the purpose behind it all, all of this has only got sharper.

What gets me every time is how heartfelt these women are, and how done they are with putting up with nonsense. Focused on their purpose, their fulfilment, and getting on with the work that matters to them. Watching women in their 50s and 60s make a real impact, here and across Australia, is one of the favourite parts of what I do.

If you need proof this is possible, go watch a few episodes. The Essence Within You, on YouTube, Spotify and iHeartRadio.

The invitation

You don't get smaller with age. You get truer. More you, not less.

The world isn't waiting for you to quieten down. It's waiting for you to walk in exactly as you are now, wisdom, your edges and all, and light the place up.

So go do your thing!

Sending you inspiration,

Sue
