Presence Is Your Brand

September 11, 20265 min read

You can have the title. The track record. The killer CV and still walk into a room and disappear.

That's not a confidence problem, it's a presence problem — and presence is the part of your personal brand nobody talks about, because it's harder to fake than a good LinkedIn headline.

Here's what I believe: people don't remember your job title unless you are the President the King or Queen, they remember how you made them feel in the room. Whether you listened, whether you were actually there, or just physically present while your mind ran three other meetings.

That's your brand. Not the polished bio. The residue you leave behind after every interaction.

Presence isn't performance. It's not "bigger voice, more eye contact, power pose in the loo beforehand." That's the armour you choose to put on. Real presence is congruence — what you say, how you say it, and who you actually are, all lined up - living your values and what is important to you. You know it too - people feel the gap when you're not, even when they can't name it.

I've built and rebuilt my own presence in rooms with nothing in common — corporate boardrooms where the culture rewards fitting in. Live TV, where the viewers are the harshest teacher of all: there's no edit button, no hiding, just you and the mic and whether you're actually there. My biggest learning moments from the five businesses, as founder or co-founder, where there was no brand guideline to hide behind — just me, at the front, being the offer.

Every one of those rooms punished me the moment I pretended and handed me opportunities I could never have imagined the moment I stopped and was truly me.

I've spent time asking people how they experience me - the good and the ugly! I know myself well and I know if I'm showing up as my best self or an average version.

That's the pattern I want you to see: presence isn't something you have in one context and not another. It's something you build, room by room, relationship by relationship, version by version of yourself, until being at the front of you stops feeling like a risk and starts being your biggest asset.

And here's why this matters for your career, not just your soul: the leaders, business owners, who get remembered, promoted, referred, chosen — they're not always the smartest in the room. They're the ones who show up as themselves, fully, and let people feel that.

You can't outsource that. No amount of branding strategy fixes a presence that's checked out.

So before you tweak the logo or rewrite the bio — ask yourself: when I walk into a room, what do people actually experience?

That's the real brand work, so start there.

If you need help with your presence, your brand, how you lead yourself - Talk to me - I'll show you how to shine!

With energy and intention,

Sue

You are successful. You are professional. You are showing up in all the right rooms, and people keep telling you that you are doing a great job.

And still there is a voice saying: I am not good enough. I do not have enough experience. They are going to find out I am a fake.

The worst part is, you are waiting for them to find out too.

Sue Kohn-Taylor has worked with hundreds of leaders, and in this clip from her Stones practice Self Doubt she names it as one of the most common themes she hears. You are not alone in it, and you are not the person that voice says you are.

This practice is for the leader performing on the outside and doubting on the inside. Which is more leaders than any room would ever admit.
